Deuteronomy 11-14; Psalm 46
*Click here to read these passages:
At least three times in Deuteronomy (in chapters 6, 10, and 11) we’ve
seen the phrase ~to love the Lord your God with all your heart and all your
soul. Moses is reminding the
people of God’s commands. In fact,
a lot is actually repeated from earlier books in the Bible. But now there is a focus on loving God
and to love and serve Him with everything.
God wanted them to follow His ways, His rules; but more than that,
He wanted their hearts. When Jesus
was asked by the Pharisees what the greatest commandment was, he answered,
“Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all
your mind. This is the first and
greatest commandment. And the
second is like it: Love your neighbor as yourself. All the Law and the Prophets hang on these two
commandments.” (Matthew 22:37-40)
In Revelation 2, the message to the church in Ephesus started off
by listing the things they had done well, their deeds and hard work. But then it says this: “Yet I hold this
against you: You have forsaken your first love.”
Thinking today about what it means to really love the Lord with
all my heart, soul, and strength.
Also taking time to remember my first love and what He has done for
me.
