1 Chronicles 27-29; Psalm 104
*Click here to read these passages:
David who is nearing the end of his time as king gives some
incredibly important advice to his son Solomon.
“And Solomon, my son, learn to know the God of your ancestors
intimately.”
(1 Chronicles 28:9a
NLT)
I really like the wording of the New Living Translation of this. Learn to know Him intimately ~ Solomon
needed to learn the history of what God had done and who God was, but to know
God intimately Solomon would also have to learn to depend on God, to go to Him
in prayer, and to listen for His voice and guidance.
“Serve him with wholehearted devotion and with a willing mind, for
the Lord searches every heart and understands every motive behind the
thoughts. If you seek him, he will
be found by you; but if you forsake him, he will reject you forever.” (1 Chronicles 28:9b NIV)
David knew his own struggles with sinful motives, and he also knew
what types of temptations would be present for Solomon as king, so he gives
this warning. He knew that if
Solomon could just keep seeking God wholeheartedly that God would keep him
close. The closer we are to the
Lord, the closer our motives and plans match up with His.
And finally, back to the New Living Translation for verse 10: “So
take this seriously. The Lord has
chosen you to build a Temple as his sanctuary. Be strong and do the work.”
God’s callings should be taken seriously. Whatever He has called us to do,
regardless of whether or not it is what we might have planned for ourselves,
regardless of whether or not it is hard or scary or different … be strong and
do it!
“The Lord has chosen you to _____________________________. Be strong and do the work.”
How do you need to fill in the blank?
