Week 19 - Day 1

1 Chronicles 11-13; Psalm 101

As I read through chapters 11 and 12 of 1 Chronicles I imagined the small group of Israelites who have finally come back home, who this book was written for, and I imagined little flames of hope sparking up in them.  As the mighty men of David are listed with their incredible strength God gave them and soldiers from each tribe listed with their bravery and loyalty, I imagine this group might start feeling a bit of pride that had been long gone in their identity as God’s chosen people.  Maybe what they are hearing and learning from the past is churning their hearts and minds and inspiring them to be who God wanted them to be.

They can see that God’s blessings when His people were faithful were evident, as were His punishments when they were not.  Psalm 101, a psalm of David says, “The deeds of faithless men I hate; they will not cling to me.  Men of perverse heart shall be far from me; I will have nothing to do with evil.”  Unfortunately most of the kings following David did not have this view toward evil.  And this would be the Israelites’ key to coming back into fellowship with God.

Romans 12:9 says “Hate what is evil; cling to what is good.”
