1 Chronicles 17-20

Keeping in mind that 1 Chronicles was written for Israelites
centuries after David’s time, it makes sense that David is used to teach them
about what Israel was supposed to be.
David was the man after God’s own heart, and his time as king of Israel
was the best time in their history.
One thing to learn from David was his desire to be near to God and
his desire to worship God. He
wanted to build the temple for the Lord.
This was a good idea from a good place in his heart. Even the prophet Nathan replied to
this, “Whatever you have in mind, do it, for God is with you.” God spoke to Nathan that night,
however, and told him that David was not the one to build the temple.
Sometimes things that seem great and make perfect sense and maybe
are even intended for the glory of God, are not in His plans. David trusted in God’s plans. Instead of just doing something for
God, he allowed God to do something through him.
David’s response to Nathan’s word from the Lord set a great
example in humility. The
commentary in my Bible points out, “David could have taken offense at Nathan’s
message; after all, God was rejecting his offer to build a temple. Instead, David accepted the news with
meekness and thanksgiving.” He
knew that his success was because of the grace of God and not of himself.
Finally, what they could learn from David was God’s promise for
his kingdom to be established forever.
So there would be another king from David’s line. There was hope.
