Isaiah 36-38
I love the power and goodness of God that
shines throughout this story.
God’s power is on display when He
delivers the tiny Judah who didn’t have a chance against Assyria. Everyone including king Hezekiah was
afraid, but Isaiah knew God would defend them. He sent this message:
“Therefore this is what the Lord says
concerning the king of Assyria:
‘He will not enter this city or shoot an arrow here. He will not come before it with shield
or build a siege ramp against it.
By the way that he came he will return; he will not enter this city’,
declares the Lord.” (37:33-34)
Power. Authority.
Strength. Goodness – to
save the king and nation who are faithful to Him and strike the one who does
evil. These verses brought a
picture to my mind of a scene from “The Lord of the Rings” when they are in
Moria and face Balrog, the demon of fire and shadow. Gandolph says to Balrog, “You cannot pass! Go back to the shadow. You shall not pass!” (I might be considered a nerd for
knowing this, but that is okay.
J.R.R. Tolkien was a believer and I love that his work is filled with
Christian themes).
And again His power and goodness is seen
when Hezekiah prays to God for the Lord to remember him after he found out he
was dying. God heard his prayer
and was moved by his tears so He gave Hezekiah fifteen more years of life.
Praising God for His power and goodness
today and asking Him to move in our lives and nation as He did for Hezekiah and
Judah.
