Joshua 11-14; Psalm 55

The Reubenites, the Gadites, and the half-tribe of Manasseh – I’ve
been wondering about these guys since we read about their special request in
Numbers 32. They had asked for
land east of the Jordan instead of their part of the inheritance of the
promised land. They made a deal in
which they promised to go over across the Jordan with the Israelites and help
in battle, but then they would go back to the land east of the Jordan.
God allowed this, but I can’t help but think…why would they settle
for something other than what God had picked out for them?
Here in Joshua we find out that they did what they promised to do
and were ready to head back to the land they had asked for. I was curious at to what happened to
these tribes so I did a little research.
Chuck Missler says in his book Learn the Bible in 24 Hours, “It
was the first region to fall to idolatry.
It was the first region to go into captivity, and even today it remains
the vulnerable buffer between Israel and Syria.”
They thought the land looked perfect for them so they thought that
it would be best for them. God
didn’t force them to take their part of the inheritance; He did allow them this
land that they wanted. But what
did they miss out on?
God is not going to force me to follow along with what He has
picked out for me. I can choose to
stay right where I am, doing what I am doing every day without change…what I
think looks best for me. But why
would I settle for something other than what God has in store?
