Joshua 1-4; Psalm 52
*Click here to read these passages:
“As I was with Moses, so I will be with you; I will never leave
you nor forsake you.”
God has given Joshua a big job to do, but God didn’t just tell him
what to do then leave him to try to do it on his own. God says to Joshua three times: “Be strong and courageous.” God knows how Joshua is feeling and
knows what Joshua needs as He says, “Do not be terrified; do not be
discouraged, for the Lord your God will be with you wherever you go.”
The story came alive to me today as I put myself in the shoes of
the Israelites. When it came time
to step onto the dry ground, that moments before had been a river a mile wide,
I imagine I would have been a little scared. I think I would probably have a moment of doubt, even though
I believe God is capable to see us through, do I believe that He actually will? But then I would see the ark of the
covenant in the middle of the river and remember that He is with me and He is
for me.
God had instructed the priests carrying the ark of the covenant,
which represented the presence of God, to go first ahead of the people. Then they were to stand firm on the dry
ground in the middle of the river holding the ark until all the people had
crossed to the other side.
He is with us. Right
there in the middle of it all saying, “Be strong and courageous. Do not be terrified; do not be
discouraged. I will be with
you. I will never leave you nor
forsake you.”
