Week 24 - Day 2

Job 18-21

*Click here to read this passage:

“Nothing is left of your answers but falsehood.”

The speeches of Job’s friends are turning more and more away from compassion and more and more toward cruelty.  Now instead of just saying that Job had sinned, they are saying that he is completely wicked.  They also don’t seem to have questioned themselves at all, believing they are right.  Zophar says, “my understanding inspires me to reply.”

I can’t help but keep thinking about the verse from Isaiah:

“For my thoughts are not your thoughts, neither are your ways my ways, “ declares the Lord.  “As the heavens are higher than the earth, so are my ways higher than your ways and my thoughts than your thoughts.” (Isaiah 55:8-9)

Job’s friends thought they had it all figured out.  If you are good, good things will happen; if you are wicked, bad things will happen.  But Job points out that this is not always the case.  Sometimes the wicked actually do prosper.

I love the glimmer of hope and faith that shows up once again in the midst of Job’s pain and confusion: “I know that my Reedemer lives, and that in the end he will stand upon the earth.”
