Job 4-7
*Click here to read this passage:
Today starts the part of the book where Job’s friends start
offering their advice. It says in
chapter 2 that Job’s friends set out from their homes, cried with Job, and sat
on the ground with him in silence for seven days and seven nights. This was the best thing his friends
offered. They obviously cared for
him, and they showed that by just being there sharing in his sorrow. But as soon as they started opening
their mouths and trying to “help,” well, they didn’t.
Job describes his friends as intermittent streams that dry up in
the heat. Ultimately they are
unreliable, as is their advice.
Everything in this world is as an intermittent stream … except for
God. “God is our refuge and
strength, an ever-present help in
trouble!” (Psalm 46:1) Ever-present! Even when it doesn’t feel like it, we can know He is
there.
Job does complain, he does get angry, he does question why … he
doesn’t question God’s existence though.
One thing to remember is he didn’t know about the conversation that went
on in heaven that we got to read about.
Maybe if he had known the reason why all of this was happening he might
have been stronger. But what God
does is far beyond our ability to grasp.
Once again, I think the lesson is, even when we don’t understand why, to
cling to God’s love, trust in His plan, and know without a doubt that He is
there in the midst of it all. He
does not leave us or forsake us.
