Jeremiah 37-39; Psalm 119: 145-152

In Jeremiah chapter 39 it says that God gave Jeremiah
a special message for Ebed-Melech.
Ebed-Melech was the one who, as recorded in chapter 38, organized the
rescue for Jeremiah out of the cistern, saving his life. God’s message was that even though
disaster was coming on the city He was going to rescue Ebed-Melech because he
trusted in God.
I like this definition of ‘Trust’: assured reliance on the character,
ability, strength, or truth of someone or something.
To trust in God means you trust in His goodness, His
power, His truth. And when you
trust in His ability and desire to intervene in your life and the lives of
others, that means you are going to spend more time in prayer seeking that
intervention.
I was struck once again today by words from Psalm 119:
“I rise before dawn and cry for help; I have put my
hope in your word.
My eyes stay open through the watches of the night,
that I may meditate on your promises.” (119:147-148)
There are many places in the Bible where it talks
about fasting and praying. As a
mom of young children fasting from food to spend time in prayer and meditation
on God’s word is hard to do. I
have to fix three meals a day for them and be with them through the day, so it
doesn’t really work. But I can
fast from sleep. I can “rise
before dawn and cry for help.” I
can meditate on His word in the night when everyone else is asleep.
For a long time now, when I can’t sleep at night, I
pray. I figure if I’m awake it
must be because there is someone I need to pray for, and sometimes God puts
specific people and needs on my heart in the middle of the night. I trust Him, so I ask Him to come.
Troubles and darkness may be near … “Yet you are near,
O Lord.”
