Luke 1-3; Proverbs 13
*Click here to read these passages:
Out of all the
gospels the gospel of Luke gives the greatest details for the birth of Jesus. Jesus, the Savior, Emmanuel – God with
us, was born. A king who was not
born in a palace but in a stable to an ordinary young girl, the promised
Messiah humbly came. And who got
to hear of the good news and experience a host of angels praising God … a lowly
group of shepherds in a field.
I love how God
doesn’t do things in ways we expect and how in everything His goodness and
compassion shine through.
Everything He did was because He loves us and ultimately so that He
could be with us. My 4-year old
daughter when saying her bedtime prayers the other night had said Amen, but
then said this: “God, I have just one more thing … God, will you stay with us
forever?” Then she answered out
loud for Him and said, “Yes, I will.”
I hope and pray that she holds on to that truth her whole life. Jesus came so He could be with us
forever.
I’m so thankful
that I grew up always knowing the truth about the real meaning for
Christmas. I can’t help but
reminisce a little today because anytime I read or hear the verses from Luke
chapter 2, I can hear my Papaw’s voice. Every Christmas growing up he would read the Christmas story
from Luke chapter 2 to all of us grandkids, and now he still does for the
great-grandkids. And it was so
much more than just hearing the Christmas story. We were surrounded by the truth of God’s word all the time
and more love than you could imagine.
Love, generosity,
wisdom … all poured out from my parents and grandparents. I took it for granted growing up, but
as I’ve gotten older I’ve realized more and more how many people did not have
what I had, and how truly blessed I’ve been. I don’t know where I’d be or who I’d be if it wasn’t for
things like my Papaw’s voice reading the word of God and that glimmer of light
in his eyes every time he did, my Mamaw’s unshakable faith, giving heart, and
spunk for life, or my parents never ending kindness, patience, and
encouragement for each other and for my sister and me. The words from Proverbs 13 certainly
ring true: “The light of the righteous shines brightly … The teaching of the
wise is a fountain of life.”
