Acts 7-8; Proverbs 27
*Click here to read these passages:
“As water reflects the face, so one’s life reflects the heart.”
Proverbs 27:19
This verse along with Luke 6:45, “For out of the overflow of the
heart the mouth speaks,” can be found exemplified in Stephen and Phillip in
Acts 7 and 8. As believers our
lives and our words should reflect our heart and the one who lives within
us.
It says at the end of chapter 6 leading up to Stephen’s speech
that everyone could see that his face was like the face of an angel. He was reflecting God’s glory. Stephen spoke knowledgeably and
intelligently about scripture.
(In fact, he gives an incredible summary/commentary on the Old Testament
if you need one.) In the face of persecution he remained faithful. Even his last words reflected Jesus
when he prayed, “Lord, do not hold this sin against them.”
Then in chapter 8 we read about Phillip and first of all how he
preached and performed miracles in Samaria, and then how he led an Ethiopian
official to Christ by listening to the prompting of the Holy Spirit. I love this example of how the Holy
Spirit can guide us very specifically if we will listen and follow. Since Phillip trusted in the Spirit’s
power and guidance, those around him met Jesus.
He dwells within us … so when others see us they should be able to
see Him.
